Finding Things in Odd Places
so many stillborncarrybirthed in secret
tiny bodies buried
in auroral scarves
beneath an oak
lonely enough
to enjoy the company
and strong enough
to bear the weight
she was trying to birth a village
—an army
——a species
but instead
a whisper of unspent breath
seeps from the leaves
on moonless nights,
diminutive ghosts
duck and goosing
beneath the branches.
