  • Well Look at That

It seems that Feministing concurs with my post a while back about the new Dell ad campaign making me want to vomit rhinestone-covered, pink bow covered girl vomit.  Fun!

  • The [Dell] Beat Goes On

I just received a comment relating back to my post about the recent blatantly sexist, cringe-inducing Dell advertising.  Apparently a letter writing campaign is afoot in France, and I whole heartedly endorse it here.  You can use the sample letter (in the post comment) and be sure to submit it via Dell’s webform or via email to someone’s assistant.

Also, there are discussion forums for the Dell Community.  I’ll be honest, the register-to-post thing dissuaded me for now as my energy level is close to zero today.  Perhaps someone else would like to get the ball rolling?

If you haven’t seen the video version in which women are depicted using light pink, hot pink, and then (gasp) red laptops only, it’s above.  I use my webcame to put on my lipstick ALL THE TIME.

  • The Slam Poetry Reactionist Movement is Upon Us

This week’s Amazing Bad Poetry Journal reviews The Treehouse, for the first time tackling a piece of cliché political slam poetry and offering up some verse in response. ABPJ, while always being a fave blog of mine, has been a little lackluster of late. This reminds me why it’s great.

Sidenote - ABPJ needs to evolve from livejournal to tumblr, amirite?

Ever wonder what the flashing string of numbers in Union Square is counting… or how to read it? Well, it’s a counting time (yes, it’s a clock, boooooo-ring…) and here’s how to read it, via doanie:
The 15 numbers of the digital clock display time going and coming relative to midnight. Read time going left to right and time coming in the opposite direction. So, if the clock reads 180746***135205 it means that it is 6:07 P.M. (18 hours/07 minutes/46 seconds since midnight) and that there are 5 hours/52 minutes/13 seconds remaining until midnight. The three numbers in between are a blur of moving numbers. It is like a digital hourglass.
I admit, I never had a clue how the hell to read that thing. Mystery solved!

  • You might have seen this epic interview puzzler

A hundred prisoners are each locked in a room with three pirates, one of whom will walk the plank in the morning. Each prisoner has 10 bottles of wine, one of which has been poisoned; and each pirate has 12 coins, one of which is counterfeit and weighs either more or less than a genuine coin. In the room is a single switch, which the prisoner may either leave as it is, or flip. Before being led into the rooms, the prisoners are all made to wear either a red hat or a blue hat; they can see all the other prisoners’ hats, but not their own. Meanwhile, a six-digit prime number of monkeys multiply until their digits reverse, then all have to get across a river using a canoe that can hold at most two monkeys at a time. But half the monkeys always lie and the other half always tell the truth. Given that the Nth prisoner knows that one of the monkeys doesn’t know that a pirate doesn’t know the product of two numbers between 1 and 100 without knowing that the N+1th prisoner has flipped the switch in his room or not after having determined which bottle of wine was poisoned and what colour his hat is, what is the solution to this puzzle?

but this collection of right answers is even better than the question.

  • attrition.org box of shit

The guys over at attrition have a custom (ritual? hazing?) wherein they mail boxes of useless crap to one another. Since “they’ve” decided to stalk me, I was recently on the receiving end of one of these Boxes of Joy. Blogging ensued.

  • via Hyperbole and a Half:

As a grammatically conscientious person who frequents internet forums and YouTube, I have found it necessary to develop a few coping mechanisms.  When someone types out “u” instead of “you,” instead of getting mad, I imagine them having only one finger on each hand and then their actions seem reasonable.  If I only had one finger on each hand, I’d leave out unnecessary letters, too!
But there is one grammatical mistake that I particularly enjoy encountering. It has become almost fun for me to come across people who take the phrase “a lot” and condense it down into one word, because when someone says “alot,” this is what I imagine. The Alot is an imaginary creature that I made up to help me deal with my compulsive need to correct other people’s grammar.  It kind of looks like a cross between a bear, a yak and a pug, and it has provided hours of entertainment for me in a situation where I’d normally be left feeling angry and disillusioned with the world.

You want to see the rest of the pictures. TRUST ME.
I wonder if Alots get along with Alrights?

  • LIGATT: Liabilities and Lamers

    (via ataferner)

    attrition.org:

Investing in penny stocks is not for the faint of heart. As such, accredited investors and bulletin board traders are typically aware of the risk of making bets on less established companies. If the company “makes it,” the rewards can be immense, and chasing this dream drives the market. Investment in firms like LIGATT Security International (LGTT.PK) comes with a heavy dose of caveat emptor, and the lack of transparency into company operations often leaves the investor to perform their own research and make decisions without a complete representation of the company’s true worth. The following information has been culled from publicly available sources such as filings with the SEC, OTCMarkets and state regulatory bodies, as well as web activity, forum posts and LIGATT’s own press releases. While this article is based on a considerable amount of research, many items have not been fully addressed in an effort to avoid undue speculation. If you have insights or comments, please send your thoughts via email to errata[at]attrition.org.

ZOMG the writing in this article is fantastic. Someone alert the Pulitzer committee, stat.
