I was reminded today of this company being ginormous in the early 90s…. and their website doesn’t disappoint. I like that 8 year old “divas” (I don’t remember that marketing angle in the 80s) are inspired to visit Roleplay: Glam section, where they are encouraged to pick up a “Tattoo Treat Bag: Indulge yourself in body art goodies!” Per-fect.

Why must all my childhood heroines be made over in a Bratzian image?

Apparently this year the “anorexic look” is in. But don’t wory, we don’t want you to be anorexic, just look anoreixic. Well unfortunately, it doesn’t work. like. that.
The model in the above photo, Coco Rochel, was told to lose some weight. She’s many inches taller than me and 10 lbs thinner, and as crappy as I may feel about myself day to day (thanks to myriad media and self ajudications), I still realize that mentality is just bat shit crazy.
Model Tatiana wrote a really well spoken article about unionization, available from Jezebel. I support unionization of all kinds, but she makes some particularly good points.
Points for anyone that can twitter me a link to video of Jeanene Garofolo doing the bit with the line “‘A return to glamor this season… a pretty face is your best asset this season.’ As opposed to last season. When ugly girls had a free ride. When back fat was all the rage.”
I looked for a good 30 minutes (laughing all the while).
Why I Have Never, ever, not even ONCE given my number out in a bar
These two voicemails are making the rounds today, which Dimitri left for Olga after two mintues of coversation during which he decided she was “elegant.” Also, he is a “great catch, “great in bed,” and “working on a movie script.” Wow, sign me up! Also, “I am Greek, so I know what I like.” The rest of us just wander around until someone tells us what we like. You must be so lucky!

Excuse the embedded video/audio that aggrevates adblock, if you are experiencing a white square. The audio still works.

This Saturday (June 28th) Pamela Means will be playing at The Living Room in the Village at 9pm. ($5, 21+)
I’ve been a fan for over decade, but finally got to see her live a few months ago. It was a great, mostly downbeat and jazzy show, and I highly recommend it. I went to buy the newest CD after the show and she had just run out, but she wrote me a receipt and mailed one out the next day - signed and everything. Pamela rocks.

amberella (me), live-tweeting from HOPE
Before The Last HOPE, ubergeeke over at .51 - Geekspace for Women asked me to keep her in mind for a guest post about the role of women in the conference. I apparently wrote her a book.
How is it that as an increasing number of women graduate with Computer Engineering and other technical or hard science degrees and girl-geek culture explodes thanks to New Media™, that there is not a commensurate increase in women’s contributions to the hardcore techie and hacker community? It’s no longer difficult to find women espousing their love of iPhone apps and digg.com – the problem is finding those that want to infiltrate the realms of bug trackers, penetration testers, and the corporate suites reserved for CTOs and CISOs. more»
This should mark the end of my HOPE related posting, as far as I know. If there’s something you’re interesting in hearing about, let me know.
And the winner is …. horrifying Dell ad! ::and the crowd goes wild::
I expect this kind of crap from Dior, but the concept that tech gadgets are not interesting to girls unless they are pink and covered in rhinestones is gag inducing. Bonus points for all the details on the locker adorning post-its (click image for large size) like “Call Leah,” “Mall with mom,” “English Test” (not math, obvs), and “I <3 ____.” And don’t forget, Girlz Rule!

As I previously mentioned, I’m a huge X-Files fan and Dana Scully was always my hero. Reading the comments on this Jezebel post makes me feel all warm and fuzzy, as I am certainly not alone (though it seemed that way in 1996, save for my bestest friend who would do XF marathons with me).
I actually haven’t seen the movie yet (::aghast!::) but only due to logistical issues. I’m so sad to hear it isn’t doing well at the box office, but really, did anyone expect better? Definitely at the top of my out-and-about to do list - this weekend, one would assume.

It seems that Feministing concurs with my post a while back about the new Dell ad campaign making me want to vomit rhinestone-covered, pink bow covered girl vomit. Fun!
The [Dell] Beat Goes On
I just received a comment relating back to my post about the recent blatantly sexist, cringe-inducing Dell advertising. Apparently a letter writing campaign is afoot in France, and I whole heartedly endorse it here. You can use the sample letter (in the post comment) and be sure to submit it via Dell’s webform or via email to someone’s assistant.
Also, there are discussion forums for the Dell Community. I’ll be honest, the register-to-post thing dissuaded me for now as my energy level is close to zero today. Perhaps someone else would like to get the ball rolling?
If you haven’t seen the video version in which women are depicted using light pink, hot pink, and then (gasp) red laptops only, it’s above. I use my webcame to put on my lipstick ALL THE TIME.
The European PS3 ads are way cooler than the US ones.
(Check out my favorite.)
That said, I don’t really know what the hell they’re going for here. My best hope is that it’s calling out the the assumption that the gnome (or mech, etc.) pwning you may be may not be a dude in his mom’s basement, but rather may be a totally hot chick that loves fragging n00bs. i.e. Gaming is an equal opportunity venture.
Of course, what they’ve created also evokes something like “inside all fat dudes there’s a skinny girl screaming to get out” or “be careful who you private message with, it’s probably not a lithe model chick,” or even, “gamer chicks are awesome … when they’re super-hot and emotionless.” Well, I’m going to give them the benefit of the doubt.

Kate Chopin wrote several books and short stories I was forced delighted to read in high school and college, especially in women’s studies classes. In later years, it turns out that I actually like and reference them rather often. Thus, it’s sad news that yesterday her 200 year old house-turned-museum in Louisiana burned down. Sadface.
I was ready to scream and throw things after running across this ad for Rose Petal Cottage, but now I’m ok with it. Clearly, the two girls are total lesbians and are equally sharing their daily home-upkeep tasks. Later, they fix the leaky sink with a fuscia crescent wrench before inviting over all the other neighborhood girls to drink Smoking Loon Merlot and watch Bound.
